This celluloid sheet depicts Onizuka as a teenager — not the teacher of Class 3-4, but the young man he once was, whose story is revealed through flashbacks throughout the GTO series. He has a short, slightly spiky haircut and is wearing a white shirt — presumably a Japanese school uniform — and behind him, a friend’s hand rests on his shoulder, though the friend’s body remains out of frame.
This cell therefore depicts a scene from Onizuka’s youth in Shonan — a period covered in its entirety by the prequel manga *Shonan Junai Gumi*, and referenced in the *GTO* anime through flashback sequences. Onizuka before he decided to become a teacher, before Class 3-4, before anything else — the gang leader in the making, still at an age of gang friendships and horizontal loyalties.
A friend’s hand resting on his shoulder epitomises precisely this horizontal bond – the camaraderie between peers, the shared solidarity of youth. It is the gesture of someone standing on the same level, neither above nor below, and who, through this physical contact, expresses a shared sense of belonging. Within the narrative logic of GTO, this flashback to Onizuka’s teenage friendship sheds light on the series in a mirror-like way: the man who will become a teacher to forge bonds with teenagers is, first and foremost, a teenager whose friendships formed the foundation of everything.
