Description
Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) (グレート・ティーチャー・オニヅカ) Eikichi Onizuka Hand-painted celluloid sheet used in the production of the anime based on the work of Tōru Fujisawa (藤沢 とおる) Produced by Studio Pierrot 1999–2000, Japan H23 L26.5 cm This celluloid depicts Onizuka outside the school setting — wearing a slightly unbuttoned blue sleeveless waistcoat, with a light three-day stubble and his hair combed forward: this is GTO away from his role as a teacher, in his street clothes, embodying his pre-school identity. The gesture of feeling the top of his bicep is precise and clear: either the satisfied self-assessment of a former gang leader who hasn’t forgotten what he’s physically capable of — Onizuka gauging his own strength with the same candour he applies to everything — or the checking for pain following a recent impact or exertion, the gesture of someone who has received or dealt a blow and is assessing the damage. The three-day stubble and the half-open waistcoat suggest the weekend or after school — Onizuka without the institution, without the shirt, without the role. This is the character in his most natural state, the person he was before deciding to become a teacher and who, deep down, remains beneath the suit.
