Ayashi no Ceres (Cérès, Célestielle Légende in French) is adapted from the manga by Yū Watase — an author also known for Fushigi Yūgi. The series follows Aya Mikage, a secondary school pupil who discovers she is the reincarnation of Ceres, a tennyo (celestial goddess) whose feathered robe was stolen by an ancestor of her family centuries earlier. This premise anchors the series in the tradition of the hagoromo legends — the celestial bird-woman — one of the oldest in Japanese mythology.
The Studio Pierrot series (2000, 24 episodes) is known for its meticulous animation and its darker tone than most shōjo productions of the period — it deals with violence, grief and identity with unusual candour.
