SUDA (Issei). “Kyotokei” Zen Foto, 2013 25 x 33.6 x 3 cm Hardback, slipcase Limited edition of 500 copies I was born and raised in Tokyo. Even after the upheavals of the post-war period and the subsequent era of rapid economic growth, my hometown continues to change. ‘Kyotokei’ is a series of snapshots of the streets and people of Tokyo in the 1970s and 1980s. When I look back at these photographs, I realise that my eyes unconsciously captured aspects of Tokyo that have since disappeared from the city. I also realise that the city is made up of a multitude of diverse people: those who have lived here all their lives, those who move here dreaming of success, those who succeed, and those who do not. The Tokyo of my youth has vanished, but there are still moments when I feel a joyful sense of nostalgia, savouring the happiness at festivals in the Shitamachi (‘lower town’) district, or observing the unconscious gestures of passers-by. The image I have of my hometown is, in fact, the spectacle of the daily lives of the people who live there. As well as being a record of a particular period in Japan’s history, this book is also my personal perspective on my hometown, a perspective I wish to keep in my heart forever. - Issei Suda Tokyokei presents 106 previously unpublished photographs of the streets and people of Tokyo in the 1970s and 1980s.
