Description
Lega Bwami Hat
DRC
This mukuba ritual hat, from the Lega ethnic group (DRC), was worn by high-ranking dignitaries of the sacred Bwami society. Its crown, made of woven plant fibres, is entirely embroidered with mother-of-pearl and plastic buttons dating from the colonial era, repurposed here to replace the traditional cowrie shells as symbols of wealth.
