Description
A tobacco jar depicting the head of a Boy Scout with blue eyes, a peachy complexion and a wide-brimmed hat, which serves as the lid. Around his neck, a cherry-coloured neckerchief bears the motto of the movement founded by Lord Baden Powell in 1917: ‘Be Prepared’, which would suggest that this piece was intended for the British market.
Early 20th-century porcelain (after 1907)
Marked on the base with ‘H&S’, standing for:
- either Hilditch & Sons of Lane End in Staffordshire;
- or Hart & Sons of London. Listed in Horowitz under number 145; the author also notes that the same model is listed in the Conta and Böhme catalogue (plate 83, number 6074) and that it exists in two different sizes: 5 and 6¼ inches.
