Description
Octagonal lead tobacco jar. The body of the jar, framed by a band of guilloché work at the top and bottom, is decorated on both the front and back with an identical scene: a young Black man is serving a European-style gentleman in a doublet and ruff, seated in an armchair and smoking a calumet. On the lid, a Mameluke in a turban, sitting cross-legged and smoking a hookah, serves as the knob. Note the internal pewter lid for tamping down the tobacco.
19th century
A virtually identical jar is illustrated in Plate 2, Figure 7, of Reginald Myer’s book *Old Chats on English Tobacco Jars*. Typical ½ Leadjar, England.
Marked, on the inside of the jar and on the base, with the diamond mark of the ‘British Patent Office’, indicating that two designs for this Class E object (lead and tin) were registered on 8 May 1872.
Polychrome, showing signs of wear and deformation.
