Description
A slightly glazed, painted earthenware pot, crudely made but featuring an extremely intricate relief decoration depicting all manner of domestic scenes. On the body, a shepherdess, with her goat at her feet, is being courted by a young farmer who offers her a bouquet, all set against a landscape of apple trees – without the serpent – and a brick house with a shingle roof. The lid depicts a village overlooked by a ruined watchtower, accessed via a staircase; the hollowed-out interior of the tower serves as a container for matches. Beauvais stoneware, late 19th century No mark. Chips. H 19cm
