Description
Fernand PINAL (Bruyères-et-Montbérault, Aisne, 1881–1958, painter and engraver, pupil of Henri Martin and Le Sidaner)
‘Study of a Nude’, original pen-and-ink drawing signed and dated ‘20 December 1919 by Pinal’ (16 x 21 cm)
[Pinal produced a canvas based on this study – this canvas was exhibited in 1927 in the window of the Galerie d’Art du Montparnasse in Paris – yet this nude has a feature that was rare for the time: she is not hairless! Faced with protests from local residents, the police commissioner asked the painter to move this ‘provocative’ painting indoors – Pinal wrote to a friend on the subject: “In Montparnasse, the world’s new artistic centre, the naked truth can only be distorted or depilated. Consequently, at the invitation—which was, incidentally, very courteous—of the Chief Constable, I had to remove this nude from the shop window where it was on display. And this was because a few ill-mannered young ruffians, or those who had run out of paint, made remarks that scandalised passers-by.”
