Remarks: A rare stoneware bottle with a handle, produced for Pagès-Ribeyre Succ., Le Puy. The bottle measures 30 cm. A small label referring to the 1889 Paris World’s Fair – ‘out of competition, member of the jury’ – is affixed above the main label.
History. The liqueur ‘Verveine du Velay’ was created in 1859 by Joseph Rumillet-Charretier, president of the Haute-Loire Chamber of Commerce for the Wholesale Liquor Trade, who set up his distillery in Le Puy.The production process involves a blend of thirty-three plants which are macerated in stills filled with brandy and cognac; this liquid is then distilled, blended with honey and sugar, stirred in casks and aged in wooden cellars for at least ten months.In 1891, the distillery passed into the hands of Victor Pagès, Rumillet’s nephew and MP for the Haute-Loire, who was also president of the Chamber of Commerce. The company then took the name Pagès-Ribeyre, after the owner’s wife.
