Description
KINORA – Casler-Lumière This model of folioscope, known as the KINORA — patented by Hermann Casler in 1894 (Mutoscope) and by the Lumière brothers in 1896 — was manufactured and distributed in France around 1900 by Louis Gaumont. The device shown here, in one of its earliest versions, is made of mahogany-veneered wood and comes with its lampshade. It contains a complete film reel and four cardboard boxes of Lumière films (a series of successive images on paper, mounted on a metal spindle, which advance via a spring-driven mechanism beneath a magnifying lens). It features a small metal lever for turning the images. Lighting is provided by a glass window through which electric or natural light passes. Please note: there are a few small chips in the veneer (see photos). Otherwise, it is in a fine state of preservation.
