An antique Ifa ritual cup depicting a mother carrying her child on her back. Hardwood, with an antique brown patina; shows signs of wear and ageing; small cracks. Yoruba, Nigeria. Height: 25 cm – Width: 25 cm – Depth: 18 cm. The ÀgéréIfá vessels form part of the ritual equipment of the babalawo, the priest-diviner of the Ifá cult. They were used in particular to hold the sixteen sacred palm nuts (ikin) used to consult the orisha Orunmila and seek guidance on one’s destiny.
