A Kyogen theatre mask depicting a demon, carved from lacquered wood. This ‘Buaku’ mask is a Kyogen version of the character Beshimi, which originated in Noh theatre. Kyogen consisted of short sketches performed between acts to lighten the atmosphere. This mask, with its strongly contorted expression, is particularly finely carved.
