Description
Circular wall light decorated with a pair of dancing Citipati.
Brass with repoussé decoration; metal foil on the reverse.
Tibet, 19th–20th century.
Diameter 41 cm.
The central medallion depicts the Citipati (Śmaśāna-Adhipati), a pair of dancing skeletons who are protectors of Tibetan Tantric Buddhism and symbolise impermanence. The rich symbolic decoration combines facing dragons, fantastical birds, serpentine motifs and friezes of skulls. In the lower section, two gazelles frame the Wheel of Dharma, evoking the Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park at Sarnath.
