Description
Architectural temple element (tundal), carved with a depiction of a deity. Weathered wood, worn by time and the elements. Newar, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, 18th–19th century. Height 48 × Width 17 cm. The deity, depicted in a supple posture reminiscent of the tribhaṅga, likely belongs to the Śivaite tradition. The presence of the triśūla (trident), a major attribute of Śiva, as well as that of a third eye carved in the centre of the forehead, suggests a form of Pārvatī or, more broadly, a manifestation of Devī/Śakti. The tundals – carved, sloping corbels characteristic of Newar architecture in the Kathmandu Valley – support the projecting eaves of the temples whilst featuring a rich array of divine figures.
