A dance and battle shield featuring a high-relief engraved design of scroll motifs and various symbols. It is surmounted by an ancestral figure

Asmat, Indonesian Papua.
Height 72 × Width 55 cm
Among the Asmat, the carved motifs on shields combine ancestral references, totemic symbols and imagery associated with the world of warfare. The figure at the top may be interpreted as a protective ancestral figure, whilst the powerful scroll motifs contributed to the shield’s symbolic power and its function of intimidating the adversary.
