H. 26 × W. 29.5 cm Among the Abelam, the cultivation of large yams gave rise to ceremonial and competitive exchanges that contributed to the prestige of the farmers. The finest tubers were richly adorned and anthropomorphised: this small wicker mask was placed on their upper part, symbolically forming their face.
