Feminine pole with a bifid top resting on a ring-shaped neck Wood, showing very ancient weathering, signs of having been buried, and cracks. Mossi, Burkina Faso. Height: 108.5 cm Among the Mossi, carved posts were placed at the entrance to the chiefs’ compounds or supported the shelters reserved for them. Some, of a feminine nature such as this one, feature a stylised breast, evoking femininity, motherhood and fertility.
