A ‘Jo Nyéléni’ statuette depicting a standing female figure, with her arms hanging loosely by her sides and her breasts thrust firmly forwards. A beautiful and powerful stylisation, particularly of the head and the overall proportions. The ears feature numerous piercings which were used to attach ornaments. Remnants of a pattern of fine engraved lines remain on the front of the bust. Wood, with a black patina that is slightly thick in places. Bamana-Bambara, Mali. Height: 50 cm Minor chips and slight cracks and erosion due to age, particularly at the base.
