The recent exhibition at the Musée Condé in Chantilly led to the rediscovery of a work by the Italian master. Our version is an example of the tradition of disseminating Renaissance paintings across Europe. This copy, executed on copper, depicts Pontius Pilate as a portly man with wide-set eyes, which may symbolise his ignorance of the consequences of his actions—represented by his open hand, richly adorned with jewellery. Christ, for his part, is depicted with a complexion characteristic of Flemish painting. This contrasts with the rich red fabric, enhanced with gold, worn by Christ’s executioner. More than just a copy, this work is a subtle testament to the influence of the Italian Masters on 17th-century European painting.
