Description
Bidjar carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), north-west Persia, circa 1930–1970.
The ivory ground is embellished with the Herati motif. This motif consists of a diamond shape formed by curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each vertex, repeated endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name).
A wide red border featuring polychrome floral motifs is framed by two counter-borders.
