Description
Mesched carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), North-eastern Persia, circa 1930–1970.
The carpet is adorned with a central polychrome, multi-lobed medallion, flanked by two pendants on a navy blue ground and decorated with the Herati motif. This motif consists of a rhombus formed of curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each apex; it is repeated endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves arranged side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name).
The entire composition is set against a navy blue background. A wide pink border featuring a garland of flowers is framed by two counter-borders.
385 x 297 cm
(Frayed on one side).
