Description
Serebent carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), north-west Persia, circa 1940–1970. The red field is decorated with the Herati motif. This motif consists of a diamond shape formed by curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each corner, repeated endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name). The entire composition is embellished with four ivory spandrels. An ivory border featuring a garland of geometric flowers frames the composition. 316 x 98 cm (Slight wear and fraying).
