Description
Serebent carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), north-west Persia, circa 1940–1970.
The red field is decorated with the Herati pattern. This motif consists of a diamond shape formed by curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each corner; it is repeated endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves arranged side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name).
The entire composition is embellished with four ivory-coloured spandrels.
A navy blue and ivory border featuring a garland of geometric flowers frames the composition.
510 x 102 cm
(Slight wear and fraying).
