Description
Bakthiar carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), south-west Persia, circa 1950–1980.
The carpet is adorned with a small ivory-coloured central medallion on a red ground decorated with the Herati pattern. This motif consists of a rhombus formed by curved stems, enclosing a rosette and surmounted by a palmette at each vertex; it is repeated endlessly, with four sickle-shaped leaves arranged side by side in each instance. This design adorned Herat carpets (from which it takes its name).
The entire composition is embellished with four ivory spandrels. A narrow marine border featuring geometric floral motifs frames the composition.
230 x 148 cm
(Slight wear and fraying).
