Description
AUTOGRAPHS – THE DU MÈGE FAMILY. Correspondence sent and received by the actor Dumège [or Du Mège] and his son Alexandre. Bordeaux and Toulouse. Late 18th century and 19th century. The collection includes letters from Madame Dumège and her son Alexandre, addressed to Du Mège senior, as well as his replies. Their son Alexandre Dumège (1780–1862), a French scholar, archaeologist and historian, was famous for his involvement in the affair of the fake bas-relief at Nérac. A number of interesting letters are addressed to him, notably by M. de Roquemaurel; by Labouisse, etc., and relate to their excavations. Various other items of correspondence are included; a work entitled ‘Some clarifications on the so-called “guillotine-style” plate, 1789–1795’, by Adrien Lesur, a ceramics expert. An amusing printed leaflet concerning the position of the body ‘whilst writing’, with an illustrated vignette (with some missing sections and water stains), etc.
