Description
1813 A canvas-mounted and coloured map of Spain and Portugal, by Edme MENTELLE (1730–1815). Colour-enhanced engraving on paper. Scale of 40 common and nautical leagues of Spain, at a rate of 20 per degree. Titled “Mapa de España y – Año de 1813 en Mid [i.e. Madrid]”, on the right. Notes in the lower left-hand corner on “the status of all the provinces of Spain and their adjacent islands” as well as on the “road leagues that are usually measured from one Spanish capital to another”. On the reverse, a cartouche—probably added later—surmounted by the royal eagle and pasted on, bears the handwritten inscription ‘España 1813’, as well as the name ‘Cdt (Commander?) Lt (Lieutenant?) A. Chapelan’. The whole piece also bears the monogram L.D. Dimensions: 81x98 cm. (Signs of wear).
