This preparatory plaster cast, covered with hundreds of reference marks (‘mise au point’), served as the working model used to carve the marble sculpture exhibited at the 1908 Salon. Its presence in the artist’s studio suggests that she may have marked out her marble sculptures herself, without systematically relying on a specialist — a rare and notable fact for a female sculptor of this generation. That year, Gillet exhibited three portraits (nos. 1954–1956): ‘Bust of Mrs H.G.’ in marble, ‘Doudou’, a marble bust, and a ‘Head of a Young Boy’ in plaster, likely portraits of her sister Henriette (the initials H.G. may refer to ‘Henriette Gillet’, her maiden name) and of her young nephews Paul and Henri Lambert, born in 1904 and 1906.
In *Le Monde illustré*, Jean José Frappa devoted one of the most glowing reviews found to date to the artist: ‘Mademoiselle Lucienne Gillet has achieved a most well-deserved success with two marble busts of solid composition and great finesse of execution, which may be counted amongst the few perfect works in this exhibition. ”
