Lucienne GILLET-DUVAL (1883–1962). Bust of a young girl with arms and hands, 1905 Plaster Signed twice ‘L. Gillet’ on the front left H. 54 x W. 51 x D. 57 cm A few minor imperfections and losses, dust and soiling Provenance: the artist’s studio in Voutenay-sur-Cure; then by inheritance; remained in the family after the sale of the house in 1979; then a private collection. Exhibition: 1905 Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts, under the title ‘Bust of a Young Girl with Arms and Hands’ (plaster), no. 1779 A wooden sculptor’s stool is included, H. 113 cm (with damage and missing top) The bust, exhibited at the Salon under the title ‘A Bust of a Young Girl with Arms and Hands (plaster)’, a veritable ode to Symbolism, is distinguished by its framing, which is deliberately extended beyond that of the classical bust. The presence of the arms and hands, explicitly mentioned in the title, signals a feat of anatomical virtuosity intended to demonstrate a craft already mastered by the young sculptor, aged just twenty-two. The following year, in 1906, the Toulouse-based artist Marie-Anne Lafaurie presented a half-length plaster bust of a writer in the act of writing, in the same composition and seated on a sculptor’s stool. Were these two works intended to be exhibited together? Did the two young women frequent the same studios and social circles? An article in *L’écho de Paris* from 1904 mentions, in succession, their works exhibited at the Salon national des Beaux-Arts: ‘the graceful figures modelled by Mademoiselle Lucienne Gillet, the dynamic statues by Madame Marie-Anne Lafaurie’. The review in the *Journal des arts* of 8 June 1905 (p. 2/4) confirms that the entry attracted attention, mentioning ‘Jeune fille’ by ‘Mademoiselle Lucienne Gillet’ amongst the works at the Salon — one of the very first individual critical mentions of the artist, a year before Palès.
