Lucienne GILLET-DUVAL (1883–1962). Seated young woman, probably Palès, circa 1906? Plaster Dimensions: 132 x 70.5 x 95 cm Minor damage (notably to the thumb of the right hand and the toes of the right foot), dust and soiling Provenance: the artist’s studio in Voutenay-sur-Cure; subsequently passed down through inheritance; remained on the property after the house was sold in 1979; then a private collection. Exhibition: most likely the plaster statue entitled *Palès*, exhibited at the 1906 Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts under no. 1796. The statue depicts a young woman seated in an academic style: her hair drawn up into a bun to frame her face, one shoulder bare where a dress strap has slipped, drapery falling in heavy folds over her legs, bare feet, her gaze lowered, in a meditative and melancholic pose, one hand resting in the folds of the fabric. It most likely corresponds to the entry submitted in 1906 entitled *Palès*, named after the Roman deity — sometimes female, sometimes male — protector of shepherds, herds and the rural economy, although the figure lacks any iconographic attributes that would precisely identify this subject.
