Description
Germany, Hamburg: a 5-ducat ‘half-Portuguese’ coin struck in 1679 by Johann Reteke. Struck to commemorate the ‘Pinneberg Interim Truce’, which marked a brief suspension of hostilities between Denmark and Hamburg. Obverse: a view of the city of Hamburg with its harbour; in the foreground, numerous ships; above, the radiant Eye of God. Reverse: the goddess of Peace, standing facing the viewer amidst the clouds, her right hand raised and holding a palm branch in her left hand, places her foot upon Mars, the god of War, who lies prostrate before her. Arranged around her are trophies of arms; above is the radiant name of Jehovah. The Pinneberg Interim Truce, concluded on 1 November 1679, marked a temporary ceasefire in the long-running conflict between Hamburg and Denmark.
