Description
A Holo mask in the shape of a buffalo head. Blackened wood with white pigment (kaolin) in the eyes and ears.
Grooved horns. Raffia collar attached to the perforations around the edge.
Very good condition, scratches and erosion at the flat end of the muzzle.
Height: 58.4 cm (23 inches).
Democratic Republic of Congo, early to mid 20th century.

- former collection number 383 in red ink on the tip of the left nostril.

The Holoholo are a Bantu ethnic group with around 15,500 speakers of the Holoholo language. They used their masks to promote success in hunting and to venerate their ancestors.
