Description
Two Mende mask-casks Height: 40.6 and 43.2 cm. Sierra Leone or Liberia, mid 20th century. One has a lowered gaze, with eyelashes visible underneath, and a hairstyle composed of curved and vertical plaits topped with a notched crest and a horn-shaped protrusion at the back. The other has a hairstyle of braids pulled up into four buns. The eye openings have been roughly chipped to enlarge them. A small aluminium crescent adorns the forehead. Long fragments of woven fibres from the costume are still attached to the lower edge. Both masks are in good condition, given their age, origin and the materials used. The first has a faulty repair to the beak (in need of restoration). The second has a fine crack on the forehead, extending to the headdress, as well as slight scratches. Provenance: Heritage auction, 9 November 2023, lot #70295.
