Description

Ibibio helmet mask Height: 53 cm. Nigeria, first half of the 20th century. This type of Janus mask was made and used by several groups in southern Nigeria, including the Igbo, Ibibio and Itzi. The scarification marks and carvings on the forehead and mouth suggest an Ibibio attribution. It has curved superstructures at the top of the head, as well as four carved heads attached separately. One face is painted red, the other black. In very good condition, given its age, origin, fragility and the materials used. A few minor cracks and scratches.
