Description
Rare model of a Dayak ship for the passage of souls (tiweh)
Assemblage of wooden figures representing characters, birds, animals and a snake on the roof.
The bow is decorated with the head of a mythological dragon (aso), with turquoise-blue glass inlays around the eyes and a tail at the back.
In good condition, despite a few broken figurines. Made up of numerous moving parts.
Kalimantan/Borneo, Indonesia, late 19th - early 20th century.
In many Southeast Asian and Indonesian cultures practising ancestor worship, effigies of soul vessels or spirits were created to accompany the souls of the deceased into the afterlife.
Length: 152 cm (60 inches).
