Description
Two leaves from an Andalusian Qur'an Fragment of 4 pages from an illuminated manuscript on parchment, comprising the complete sura az-Zalzalah (XCIX), from verse 8 of al-Bayyinah (XCIIX) to verse 1 of al-iyat (C). Single-column text, 6 lines in sepia, two illuminated sura titles in kufic script with marginal rosettes in gold and outlined in blue, diacritics and vocalisation in green and orange. 17 x 14 cm (writing area: 11.5 x 8.5 cm). Al-Andalus, or Muslim Spain, 14th century. A few damp stains along the upper edge of the bifolium, central split along the upper edge, small tear with slight loss on the upper margin of one leaf (does not affect the text). Sura az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake) refers to the Day of Judgement, when the earth itself will tremble violently to bring to the surface all the good and bad deeds of man, and testify in his favour or against him before Allah.
