Description
Manuscript mixtures on the Marquis of Pombal, 18th century Collection of manuscripts, on paper, in Spanish and Portuguese, circa 1780. In folio. (1), 86, (10 blank leaves). Bound in 19th century acid-stained sheepskin (pasta española). Leather title-piece inscribed in gilt Varios 19. Very good condition. Legible writing. With folding table. This volume includes: News of the prisoners held at the fort of La Junquera in Lisbon, Very secret observations of the Marquis of Pombal on the site of the equestrian statue of His Majesty, Memorandum in court of Francisco Josef Caldera Suarez Gallardo y Mendaña, plaintiff against the defendants for the enormous damage, the very excellent Lords Marquis de Pombal and the Marquise, his wife, Memoirs of the Marquis de Pombal requesting his retirement and various justifications concerning his conduct and disinterestedness, Extract of the income and property that Cardinal Pablo Carvalho de Mendoza and his brother, the secretary Francisco Xavier de Mendoza, received annually at the time of his death and News relating to the introduction of fabrics and carpets (bayetas) into Portugal, 23 March 1779. The manuscripts are in Spanish translated from Portuguese, with the exception of one, which is in Portuguese. With one exception, they concern the various activities of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo (1699-1782), Marquis of Pombal (better known by this title), who ruled Portugal for more than twenty years. He reorganised the Portuguese administration, promoted the development of Macau and Brazil, expelled the Jesuits, restored order and rebuilt Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. The document in Portuguese is Pombal's detailed plan for the erection in 1775 of an equestrian statue of the King to thank him for the reconstruction of Lisbon. The first document in the volume is the first-person account by the Marquis of Alorna of his imprisonment in the infamous Junqueira Redoubt. He describes the physical conditions, the other prisoners, the daily treatment and the despair of the situation of political prisoners. Some of the texts in this manuscript volume were printed in their original Portuguese at the end of the 19th century. Apparently, the Spanish-language versions only circulated in manuscript form and were never printed.
