Description
18th century French manuscript Arithmétique indispensable à toute personne de quel état et professsion qu'elle puisse être, et surtout d'une nécessité absolue à celle des finances, de commerce et généralement à toutes sortes d'arts.... le tout ne formentera qu'un abrégé des arithmétiques et Géométrie du Frère J.-B. Féraud, par J.-B. Tugal sous la conduite dudit frère J.-B. Féraud, hermite à Saint-Louis le 1er mai 1772. Manuscript in French on paper, written in cursive in brown ink, richly illustrated with naive zoomorphic and floral initials in colour, as well as similarly executed borders, cartouches and drawings. 40.7 x 25 cm. 164 pages. Bound in contemporary vellum, with restorations, stains and arithmetic calculations in ink on the boards. Visible damp stains in the gutters, occasional stains and soiling, a few small holes through the open leaves and marginal worms in the second half of the volume not affecting the text. Jean-Baptiste Féraud was a cleric of the Abbey of Cluny who was in charge of the accounts of the farmers and receivers of the Cistercian abbey. The Saint-Louis hermitage was located in the forest of Fontainebleau.
