Description
A great Spanish antiphonary Manuscript on vellum with beautiful illuminations. Large folio (76 x 56 cm). The colophon indicates that it was written in 1716 by Brother Simon Monreal. Spain, Zaragoza, early 18th century. More than one hundred leaves. Illuminated with the coat of arms of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy (Orden de la Merced) surmounted by the portrait of its founder, Saint Peter Nolasque. Another illumination depicts Saint Peter Nolasque kneeling before freed captives under the gaze of the Virgin in heaven. Richly decorated lettering. Period binding. The leather on the wooden boards is missing. Remains of metal clasp. The leaves are detached.
