Moses of Khorene (Մովսէս Խորենացի), Treatise on Rhetoric also called Book of Chries (Գիրք Պիտոյից) Edited by Hovhannes vartabed Zohrabian. Venice, Saint-Lazare, 1796. In-8°. 488 pages. An engraving depicts a wise vardapet instructing a young disciple humbly receiving his teaching. The inscription below the image exhorts the reader to follow the example of the vardapet Moses and to adorn himself with a "flowery crown of the soul", symbol of wisdom and virtue. Library stamp and signature of Dr. Roupen Zakarian (1947), the last Armenian senator in the Turkish Republic. Vintage binding in poor condition. Binding rubbed. Fillets on boards. Spine decorated. This rhetoric manual, written in the 5th century, is one of the fundamental monuments of Armenian educational tradition. The text was widely used in medieval Armenian schools as the main manual for rhetorical exercises and moral instruction, while also incorporating elements of theology and classical rhetoric. A rare first edition of this book. It is of great historical, philological and bibliophilic importance.
