Description
Silver and gilt chalice The inscription in cursive Armenian letters at its base can be translated as follows: This chalice was offered in 1642 to the church of Sourp Kévork church in Constantinople, in memory of the souls of our brothers from the village of Guedzvagna (????????), living and dead. Amen. This chalice is in pure Armenian style, with a very wide pedestal. It is decorated with angels in the clouds. The base is decorated with three medallions representing the Baptism, Last Supper and Resurrection of Christ, surrounded by vine and wheat plants. The church of Saint The church of St George mentioned in the inscription is in the Samatya district of Istanbul. We have not identified the village mentioned in the inscription. Height: 31.5 cm.
