Description
Small silver blessing cross
The cross features an unusual design of stylised, curvilinear foliage around a figure probably representing the Christ Child. Along the sleeve is a spiral inscription in Armenian that translates as : This cross was donated to the church
Sainte-Barbe (Sourp Varvar) by Khatchadour Boulkhassian, son of Meguerditch and the late Tevres.
Height: 19 cm.
Ottoman Armenia, 19th century.
The church of Saint Varvar was located in the village of Hussenig. It was one of the largest Armenian churches in the province of Kharpet, dating from the 13th century. It was a place of pilgrimage for the sick, particularly those suffering from eye disease.
