Description
Mask from the panther society, wild expressiveness Rattan frame, fabric, horn, human hair, marks of use, tears Bangwa / Bamileke, Cameroon, probably mid 20th century Height 164 cm Among the Bangwa and Bamileke peoples of Cameroon, the masks of the Nkogan society, known as the 'panther men', are distinguished by their visual power. This hooded mask features a highly expressive face, with wide-open eyes and a taut mouth, topped by a set of horns that accentuate its hybrid character. The use of human hair, often plaited in long braids that fall to the bottom, reinforces the organic aspect of the whole. Worn during the dances of the Nkogan society, it transforms the dancer into a controlled animal figure, evoking the panther through its stealthy presence and intensity. - Expert: Serge REYNES
