Description
Kneeling hermaphrodite figure holding a receptacle Wood, old brown patina, slightly thick in places, erosion and marks of age. Dogon, Mali, end of the 19th century - beginning of the first half of the 20th century. Height 28 cm Provenance : - Former Charles Ratton collection, Paris - Private collection from the south of France - Acquired by Antonio Segui from Galerie Philippe Ratton, Paris This kneeling figure stands out for the balance of its volumes and the legibility of its silhouette. The compact body is organised around the receptacle held with restraint, forming a stable composition with clean, well-paced lines. Kneeling hermaphrodite figures are rare. This representation combines masculine and feminine principles in the same form, expressing an idea of unity and wholeness. The combination of this duality with a posture of offering reinforces the singular character of the sculpture. It suggests its use in the context of a family altar, where the search for balance between forces is essential. The thick patina, accumulated over time, bears witness to prolonged use. The piece is characterised by a great economy of means in the service of direct expression. The figure is imposing in its density, the accuracy of its proportions and the silent force that emanates from it. A certificate of authenticity will be given to the buyer. - Expert : Serge REYNES
