Description
Medicine flask with anthropomorphic stopper Coloquinte, dark beads, cords, wood, old patina and marks of use. Nyamwezi, Tanzania, probably early 20th century. Height 35 cm Nyamwezi medicine gourds are made from Lagenaria sphaerica and are used to hold therapeutic or protective preparations. The sculpted stopper, often anthropomorphic, embodies an active presence linked to the contents it protects. The object is handled by the healer or the holder of the knowledge, in a setting where the material contained and the sculpted form both contribute to the efficacy sought. - Expert : Serge REYNES
