Description
GALLÉ, Emile (1846–1904)
A rare green glass vase with an enamelled decoration of frogs, accented with gold, set amongst stylised foliage
Signed within the decoration: ‘E. Gallé Comp. et Del. Nancy. Exposition 1878’
On the base: Re-produced at the Nancy Gallé crystal works, 1900
Comparison: The enamelled relief frog decoration on this vase can be compared to a flask with a frog decoration featuring the same decorative style, attributed to Émile Gallé circa 1890, sold at Dorotheum (Vienna), Jugendstil und angewandte Kunst, 13 June 2016, lot 111 (est. €8,000–10,000, sold for €8,500, or €10,625 including fees). Whilst the forms differ, the quality of the amphibians’ design, the modelling of their bodies, and the use of polychrome enamels and gilded highlights all bear witness to a shared inspiration.
Provenance: Private collection, Art Nouveau / Art Deco – Geneva
