Georges Frédéric Rötig (1873–1961), an Alsatian painter, illustrator and engraver, is regarded as one of the leading figures in French animal painting of the first half of the 20th century. Trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg under Anton Seder, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he was taught by Heinrich von Zügel, one of Europe’s leading masters of animal painting. Deeply influenced by the work of Rosa Bonheur and the great German naturalist painters, Rötig developed a fascination for the wildlife of the Vosges and the Black Forest at a very early age. Exhibiting regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member, he built a solid reputation through his hunting scenes and his depictions of deer, wild boar and large animals observed in their natural habitats. His work is characterised by a keen observation of animal behaviour, a rigorous draughtsmanship stemming from his academic training, and a keen sensitivity to atmospheric effects.
