Description
Set of 25 negative and positive cameo impressions This set brings together a fine selection of subjects inspired by Greco-Roman mythology and ancient iconography. It includes numerous mythological scenes, as well as a collection of portraits and figures in the classical style. Among the identifiable motifs are several depictions of Cupid (Eros), including two scenes featuring Cupid and Venus, illustrating the relationship between the goddess of love and her son. The lot also includes a depiction of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory, recognisable by her outstretched wings. A set comprising a negative and a positive depicts Apollo, identifiable by his lyre, bow and quiver of arrows – attributes of the god of music, the arts and light. One of the pieces depicts a scene of sacrifice to Priapus, bearing a signature attributed to the Pichler family. The Pichlers were one of the most prestigious dynasties of gem-engravers and intaglio artists active in Rome during the Neoclassical period. Their creations, inspired by the masterpieces of Antiquity, were renowned throughout Europe for their quality of execution and their remarkable fidelity to ancient models. The lot also includes a positive and a negative depicting a dancing satyr, who may also be interpreted as the god Pan. Furthermore, there is a depiction of Poseidon, god of the seas; a scene that may illustrate Achilles examining his new weapons, a famous episode from the Trojan War; and a female figure that may evoke Venus at her bath, a theme particularly favoured in ancient and Neoclassical art. Finally, another composition may depict the divine personification of the Breeze. As found
