Description
A collection of around forty negative and positive cameo impressions This lot presents a rich selection of subjects inspired by Greco-Roman mythology, ancient art and neoclassical glyptics. It brings together numerous mythological scenes as well as a significant collection of male and female profile portraits in the style of classical antiquity. Among the most remarkable pieces is a design of which there are two examples, including a version in moulded glass, probably depicting a Bacchante, recognisable by her partial nudity, her thyrsus (the staff of Bacchus) and her posture, with her head bowed towards the ground. One of these examples bears the signature ‘HECKER’. This signature refers to Christian Friedrich Hecker (1754–1795), a famous 18th–19th-century German gem engraver, who trained in Rome in the workshop of the great master Giovanni Pichler. The lot also includes a depiction of Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory; a scene of Leda and the swan; and a Hermes depicted in mid-flight, identifiable by his caduceus, the symbol of the messenger god. It also features the famous ancient allegory of the Merchant of Love, in which a merchant presents a small winged Cupid to a standing customer, a theme frequently depicted in Greco-Roman and Neoclassical art. Another scene appears to depict Venus reprimanding or punishing Cupid, a subject illustrating the relationship between the goddess of love and her son Eros. The lot also includes a positive and a negative, likely depicting Heracles strangling the Nemean lion—the first of the Greek hero’s Twelve Labours, an iconic episode in which he overpowers the invulnerable lion with his bare hands. Another composition may depict Heracles capturing the Ceryneian hind, another major episode in his labours. Finally, the set includes two historical portraits with their positives and negatives: a portrait, probably of Elizabeth I of England; a portrait of Henry IV, King of France, signed ‘Brown’. This signature refers to William Brown (1748–1825), one of the most famous British gem engravers of the 18th century, who worked with his brother Charles Brown. From 1786 onwards, the Brown brothers worked almost exclusively for the great Empress Catherine II of Russia, who commissioned them to produce an extensive series of historical cameos depicting European sovereigns, notably the kings of France and England. The original works from this prestigious commission are now housed in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. As is
