Description
A collection of around thirty negative and positive cameo impressions This collection brings together a fine selection of subjects inspired by Greco-Roman mythology and ancient iconography. It includes numerous mythological scenes, as well as a substantial collection of profile portraits, depicting both men and women in the classical style. Among the identifiable motifs are a portrait of Heracles, recognisable by the skin of the Nemean lion covering his head, as well as another depiction of the hero at rest, an emblematic theme in ancient art. The lot also includes a profile of Athena, identifiable by her helmet, as well as a portrait of Zeus Ammon, recognisable by his characteristic ram’s horns, inherited from his identification with the Egyptian god Amun. Another composition depicts an ancient poet or philosopher, who could be interpreted as Homer or an ancient sage, subject to interpretation. One of the models, made of moulded glass, bears a signature in the Greek alphabet attributed to the famous Pichler family, a prestigious dynasty of gem and intaglio engravers active in Rome during the Neoclassical period. The Pichlers were among the greatest engravers of semi-precious stones of the 18th and 19th centuries, renowned for their reproductions of ancient works and the exceptional finesse of their craftsmanship.
